Multiple data acquisition systems (DAQ’s) are available on the market. Within the NVMS/HBK portfolio, there are multiple product families of great data acquisition systems, with names such as QuantumX, SomatXR, LAN-XI, Genesis, etc. The criteria to select the most suitable DAQ vary. They include precision, sampling rate or bandwidth, supported sensor types, signal processing capabilities, support of FBG-based optical sensors, price per channel, etc. One important criterion is the DAQ’s capacity to withstand the environmental conditions it operates in, and to operate reliably and accurately in the long-term.
Defence-related tests and measurements vary in their set-ups. At one end of the spectrum, some tests take place in well controlled environments. At the other end of the spectrum, some DAQ’s are exposed to harsh conditions close to the ones faced by military equipment when deployed on operations. Harsh environments are also encountered in many other settings (mining, construction, offshore oil & gas, etc.)
SomatXR is one family of data acquisition systems. Each SomatXR module can operate as an individual DAQ, with a range of sensors connected to it. Alternatively, multiple SomatXR modules can be connected to each other and therefore form a larger system. An overview can be found on SomatXR Topologies | HBM Just like for QuantumX, this modularity ensures strong return on investment in the long-term as the modules can be redeployed as technical needs change.

A key characteristic of SomatXR modules is their capacity to operate reliably in harsh environments. They have IP65/IP67 ratings for dust and water. Their temperature range is -40 to +80 °C. And they comply with MIL-STD202G for vibrations and shocks, with 10g and 75g respectively.
Many SomatXR modules exist. Some are listed below:
- SomatXR MX840B-R is a 8-channel universal DAQ supporting a very large amount of sensor technologies, with a sampling rate of 40 kS/s.
- SomatXR MX1615B-R is a 16-channel DAQ ideal for strain measurement.
- SomatXR MX1609KB-R and MX1609TB-R are 16-channel DAQ’s focused on dynamic temperature measurement.
- SomatXR MX411B-R reaches sampling rates of 100 kS/s on 4 channels and 200 kS/s on 2 channels.
- SomatXR CX22B-R-W is the ruggedised data recorder which supports the above measurement modules.
Datasheets and other modules can be found here.
